If there is one thing that drives progress in human civilization, it is technology. With technological progress, the length and quality of people’s lives improve.
There have been a lot of new technologies introduced in recent years. Some have had profound impacts on the way people live such as with the smartphone. Others are sure to have a huge impact soon such as with driverless cars and 3D printing. However, one new technology introduced in the past several years that perhaps has had the most impact on how information technology works is the cloud.
What Is the Cloud?
The cloud is a complete transformation of how computer programs, files, and data are accessed. No longer do applications and data have to be stored on a person’s own local hard drive or even downloaded to it via a web browser. Instead, they can be accessed completely over the internet.
Cloud internet architecture is also designed in a way that makes it scalable. The resources allotted to a certain website, for example, can expand along with its web traffic. This is a huge difference over traditional internet hosting space.
Due to this, the cloud has many great and exciting applications. Some of them are quite innovative. Below are just a few.
One of the most surprising and exciting applications of cloud computing regards its use to help stop the spread of disease. Cloud technology combined with artificial intelligence and big data analytics is being deployed by Microsoft and the Egyptian government to stop the next Ebola outbreak. They hope this technological approach will help health officials to more efficiently quarantine future outbreaks of Ebola. If successful, the same approach may be applied to outbreaks of other infectious diseases as well.
School Text Books
These days, school text books don’t have to actually exist in a printed format. Instead, the text, as well as associated home work, can be loaded directly onto a tablet provided by the school. Nothing needs to be downloaded either. It can all be done through a cloud powered app. This can give teaches greater control over the materials provided to students. It can be more effective at fostering learning as a result.
Teen Driving Safety
The cloud will soon absolutely transform the world through its application in driverless cars. However, there are already other cloud applications that are widely available that are designed to make driving safer including for teens. One is SyncUp Drive by T-Mobile. This app allows parents to monitor their children’s driving habits. If they’re speeding, you’ll know. You can also use the app to call for roadside assistance for your children if necessary.
Live Voice Translation
On Star Trek, characters wore ear pieces that could immediately translate the languages of aliens into understandable English. While this was once something out of science fiction, it will soon be science fact thanks to cloud computing. A host of companies, including Google and Microsoft, are working on such projects. In the near future, you may be able to visit foreign countries and understand every word said to you thanks to such a device that deploys cloud computing technology.
Digital Parking Meters
Another surprising use for the cloud is as a way to replace traditional parking meters. An app called ParknCloud does just that. The app allows you to pay for your parking spot digitally. This can be really convenient considering the fact that people really don’t have a need to carry a lot of change around otherwise. The app can also alert you when your time is running out so you can avoid costly tickets.
As with a lot of new technologies, the cloud can do truly amazing things. Some of these applications are quite surprising like the ones listed above. Due to how efficient and convenient cloud computing technology is, it will likely be further engrained into our lives in the future.
