There’s no denying the recent boom that’s happening to the industry known as the Internet of Things (IoT). It’s been estimated that the worldwide market is going to grow over 1 trillion dollars over the next five years, and it’s easy to see it’s not going to stop there.
Of course, as the sector grows, and more and more start-ups are formed, and established businesses grow, this then creates opportunities for new jobs. However, companies these days are looking for the best of the best; so how can you maximize your chances of being considered?
Today, we’re going to explore seven essential need-to-know tips on how to boost your chances of securing your next dream job in the IoT industry.
#1 – Realise the Potential
As we mentioned above, the industry is rapidly growing, and there’s no denying there’s a job vacuum here as more and more positions are created and are becoming required to be filled. These jobs can range from anything from managers for businesses and departments to computer science professionals.
In short, it doesn’t really matter what kind of job you’re looking for; you can bet your bottom dollar that a company in the IoT industry needs you. This is your time to take advantage of the situation.
#2 – Have a Passion for Devices
The IoT is literally just a term for talking about Internet-connected devices, which means you should probably have a passion for devices, gadgets, and gizmos. If you don’t want your Alexa from your Siri, you’re probably not suitable for the industry.
“Try to stay up to date with the most recent and important device and gadget news in order to stay in the know and stay informed with what’s going on in the industry. This is a great tip for impressing people at interviews” explains Paul Davis, a career advisor for State of Writing.
#3 – Research Companies
When you’re looking into the job you want to get into, it’s important also to research the company you’re planning to work for. In the IoT industry, companies can vary dramatically, and for your own happiness and success, you’re going to want to work in a company with a culture you can relate to.
#4 – Get Educated
Since the IoT is, on the grand scale of things, quite a new industry, if you’re looking to secure a job, you may need to get learning in order to give yourself the skills you need to be qualified and the carry out the job. This can be done by going to university or college, or by taking an online course.
“Looking into the job role you want and what skills you need to get there. This is best done as early as possible, so you can give yourself the time you need to learn properly” shares Jill Turner, a recruitment manager for Boom Essays and Essay Roo.
#5 – Wear Many Hats
This, of course, depends on the job role you want to get into, but it’s still important to make sure you’ve got many of the ‘soft skills’ a company will be looking for. You will be expected to have customer service skills, technological experience, and a great attitude towards working as a team.
#6 – Think About Security
One of the biggest concerns when it comes to IoT devices and computer networks etc. is the security of the devices. Of course, a lot of personal data and information is going to pass through these devices, and your company could be handling a lot of important data.
This is why it’s important to develop a security-conscious mindset where you know the risks and dangers of computer systems, and you know how to protect yourself and the business from threats; such as using strong passwords and logging out of company accounts etc.
#7 – Networking is Key
Never underestimate the power of networking and what you can achieve through meeting people face to face. It’s one thing to send off resumes and make cold calls, but this is nothing compared to speaking to people and getting to know them.
“Try to get out into the world and attend networking events related to the IoT industry. Get involved, meet new people, talk to them and you never know what you might learn or what opportunities will be presented to you” says Natalie Taylor, a tech professional for Academized and Paper Fellows.
As you can see, there are lots of things you can do when it comes to finding and securing a job in the IoT industry. Just remember to be passionate about what you’re doing, share your enthusiasm wherever you go, and you’ll surely be able to find the perfect job you’ve been looking for.
